Three Essex pubs have been named among the best across the country as part of a national awards scheme.
The Pub and Bar awards shine the spotlight on the best in the business, with this year's event marking its 10th anniversary.
Representing Essex as part of the East of England category are the Galvin Green Man, The Three Horseshoes, and The Windmill Chatham Green.
The Three Horseshoes
This family-run country pub and restaurant is nestled just outside Colchester in the village of Fordham.
Its high standard has been rewarded with three Rosettes from the AA restaurant guide, as well as the crown at the 2024 East of England Tourism Awards.
Local produce, beers, wines and friendly service are the cornerstones of the pub, which also features The Coffee Shed on its grounds, serving cakes, sausage rolls, croissants and paninis.
Galvin Green Man
Located in Main Road, Great Waltham, this pub just outside Chelmsford is a hidden Gem,
Featured in the Michelin Guide, the pub is part of the Galvin empire and found its home in one of Essex’s oldest pubs, dating back 700 years.
Serving traditional British dishes and Mediterranean Cuisine, Galvin Green Man was opened in November 2016 by Essex-born brothers Chris and Jeff Galvin.
The Windmill Chatham Green
With a focus on modern cuisine, unique cocktails and wines, the family-run pub The Windmill in Little Waltham was named Travellers’ Choice 2025 by Tripadvisor.
The pub, which is also dog-friendly, uses local, seasonal and foraged ingredients for its dishes, which guests have described as a “truly memorable meal” with its service “just as impressive as the food”.
From the 252 nominees, 94 county winners will be announced at the live event on June 10.
Tristan O’Hana, editor of Pub & Bar magazine, which hosts the event, said: “Our bigger and better format that debuted in 2025 was such a success, we can’t wait to roll it out again this year.
“The fact that the celebrations last from the long Easter weekend, when we celebrate this year’s County Nominees, right up until the awards night at the beginning of summer, is no less than this wonderful industry deserves.
“We just want to do what we can to spread the word about these brilliant businesses.”
The National Pub and Bar Awards shortlist is based on factors including marketing, digital presence, design, service, style of offer and investment.
Galvin Green Man has previously won at the scheme, including being named best pub in the East of England in 2022 after taking the Essex county title.
