Search the Public Notice PortalFrequent users of a busy car park in Colchester’s city centre have shared their frustrations about long term plans to shut it and make way for housing.
It comes as Colchester Council confirmed its intention to shut temporarily Britannia car park later this year as part of a major redevelopment project at St Botolph's Quarter.
With around 370 spaces, as well as a motorcycle area, disabled parking spaces and spaces for users of the "Loveurcar” car sharing scheme, the amenity proved popular among residents.
There are also long term to shut the car park and build homes on the site, but the Gazette understands this could be years off.
While the plans for the change have been mooted for decades, the decision has left drivers disappointed.
Colchester mum Courtney Grant was shocked to hear about the closure.
The 32-year-old said: “I always park here, this car park has such easy access.

“Especially the disabled spaces, and it is also so much quieter here.
“I always get a space here, and there are no other places where you can get this much access in the city centre.
“The only other car park I would use is Vineyard Street car park, but that one has less disabled spaces. And it always depends on whether the lift is working.”
Paul Underwood, 72, is a volunteer and frequently uses the car park to pick up a man he is supporting from the nearby St Botolph’s ECL meeting space.
He said: “It will be a great inconvenience for us. The drama group which uses the space at St Botolph’s church, they run performances and the audience is able to park here.
“This will not be an option anymore.
“It feels like the council is closing down the city centre. There is nowhere to park, where it is this convenient.
“I’d rather drive to Ipswich to do my shopping these days.”
Motorcyclist Paul Storey, 60, said the closure of the car park will be a huge loss for the city and its centre.
He said: “When it shuts, it will be a massive loss. My wife and I have used this car park for years, it takes you only five minutes to the centre.
“And yes, there are motorcycle spaces in the High Street, but they are always taken by the delivery drivers.
“The redevelopment is a waste of money, and I can’t see a picnic area here, if there was restaurants here, maybe.
“Colchester will lose its cheapest and most convenient car park, once this is gone.
“And for me, I live in the Hythe area, the park and ride service, doesn’t serve my area, so I won’t be using it.”
