Search the Public Notice PortalA building in the city centre is seeking permission to change from office to retail use as a new business is coming to Colchester, a planning application has revealed.
Mr Peter Loftus of Dream Doors Ltd is hoping to change the permission of use for 65 Crouch Street, right next to The Hospital Arms.
According to its website, Dream Doors Ltd is a kitchen door makeover company with more than 90 showrooms nationwide.
The building only has a condition imposed where it can only be used as offices.
The planning statement said: “The premises previously operated as a retail unit, consistent with earlier versions of the Use Classes Order.
“This historic condition is no longer aligned with national or local planning policy, and the reinstatement of retail use.
“This application seeks to remove or vary an outdated condition limiting 65 Crouch Street to office use only, thereby restoring a lawful Class E Retail use consistent with national guidance, local policy, and the property’s prior established use.”

The application also says Crouch Street forms part of a “vibrant edge-of-centre retail environment that benefits from strong footfall and a mix of independent and national operators”.
No external or internal physical alterations are proposed as part of the application.
It is believed removing the historic condition on the building will support “Colchester’s retail strategy and economic objectives”, the application said.
A Dream Doors showroom is “the best place to get expert advice and inspiration from your local designer” and to see its full range of kitchen replacement doors and worktops.

A Google search suggests the Colchester showroom is intended for 65 Crouch Street although its website only says the showroom is opening soon but does not say the address.
Reacting to the business and application, Castle ward councillor Amy Kirkby-Taylor said: “It is always good to see people planning to expand into Colchester.
“We are a growing and vibrant city, and there are some plans underway to encourage business development in Colchester.
"BID do an amazing job, and I know they are supporting a lot of local businesses to develop and expand.
“Regarding the planning conditions, I can say that conditions are never used lightly, they are there for very good reason.
“I would need to look it up to know what is going on here and speak to the planning officers.
“Refurbishment is brilliant, broadly speaking, it’s always going to be a lot greener and a lot lower carbon emission to refurbish something you have rather than throw it away and start again.
“Refurbishment is key to creating a future which is inherently sustainable.”
A decision is yet to be made by Colchester Council.
