A parish council spokesperson said the proposal is rooted in the village’s history.
They said: “East Bergholt is the birthplace of John Constable, with over 130 of his paintings depicting our landscapes — views that remain largely unchanged today.
“Green open spaces run into the heart of the village, preserving its rural character and walkable setting.
“The proposed areas reflect our historic development, linking the old 'Ends' that grew around the Heath.”
The proposed extension includes Gaston End, Quintons Road, Box Iron, the Donkey Track and surrounding fields, as well as Gandish Road, Burnt Oak, and the fields towards Flatford with Flatford Mill and the River Stour.
Babergh Council will run a formal consultation in May, with a final decision expected ahead of John Constable’s 250th anniversary.
East Bergholt residents can have their say at the Congregational Church in Cemetery Lane on Saturday, from 9am to 2.30pm.
In 2017, East Bergholt residents discussed a proposal for the parish to move from Suffolk to Colchester in Essex, arguing it could offer stronger protection from developers.
The same meeting heard that 230 more homes were proposed for the village at the time, with concerns that developers were prioritising larger four and five-bedroom properties.
