VENUES, organisations, and groups across Colchester are celebrating International Women’s Day with a variety of events.
International Women’s Day (IWD) was first held in 1911 before becoming officially recognised by the UN in 1975.
This year’s IWD theme is #GiveToGain referring to groups and individuals who share knowledge, time, and resource to help drive empowerment.
The additional UN theme for this year is rights, justice, and action for all women and girls in the UK.
IWD is celebrated on March 8, and it falls on a Sunday this year meaning many organisations are celebrating on other days in March.

Networking – Metro Bank / Get Ahead Essex
Supported by Colchester BID, the event it fronted by Get Ahead Essex and hosted by the Metro Bank on the Hight Street where the event will take place.
The free networking event includes food, drinks, and a line-up of speakers including business figures from Colchester.
The event will take place from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday March 12.
Career’s Fair - St Mary’s Colchester
As reported here, this event is aimed at young girls from Year Four and above to help them imagine and plan for their future careers.
The Future Females Careers Fair will take place from 11.30am to 1pm at St Mary’s School in Colchester, following the success of last year’s event.
Women’s Conference – FirstSite
Called ‘@10: A Decade of Inspiration, Empowerment and Change’ this event is the 10-year anniversary for annual women’s conference.
The event, organised by AFiUK (African Families in the UK), will take place on Wednesday March 11 from 9.30am to 2pm at FirstSite in Colchester.

Co-working Day – Colchester Business Centre
Ambitious Women in Essex are inviting at=needed to join them for their special co-working day on Wednesday March 11 from 9am to 4pm.
The group’s Co Working Days happen twice a month in partnership with Colbea North, with the event taking place at the Colbea North Colchester Business Centre in the Crescent in Highwoods.
There is an open-plan workspace, an optional private room for calls, as well as informal ‘intro and learn’ slots plus a 30‑minute session where attendees introduce themselves.
Please indicate when registering if you would be interested in delivering a ‘intro and learn’ session.
Being held at the Colbeas North Branch, the organisers say there is ample parking on site, and the office is accessible by public transport.
Thursday Festivals – Colchester Creative
First Thursdays is a monthly festival with events throughout Colchester city centre, celebrating the city’s vibrancy and diversity.
The next Thursday on March 5 will be a special IWD edition of the festival, with people being to expect a creative Portrait Photography workshop, a Women’s football history talk at Headgate Theatre, and a sustainable ‘totes’ for women’ textile workshop.
There will also be performances by powerful women of Musical Theatre cabaret at Firstsite.
