THE mayor and MP of Colchester will go head-to-head in a chess tournament at Moot Hall.
Colchester Chess Day will be held at the historic Colchester Town Hall on Saturday, February 21.
The all-day event, which celebrates the strategic game for all ages and skill levels, is open to chess enthusiasts, families, and more.
Mayor of Colchester Mike Lilley and MP Pam Cox will take part in an exhibition game during the day.
The chess day is organised in collaboration with chess clubs from the area and the national charity Chess in Schools and Communities (CSC).
It aims to foster a love for chess within the community, as well as to contribute funds to the Mayor’s charities.
Players can compete to win the Mayor’s Colchester Chess Rapidplay Championship Trophy, with six rounds of fast-paced competition.
Schoolchildren will also have the opportunity to get involved in activities and games designed by the Chess in Schools and Communities, which aim to introduce junior school children to chess and improve their play.
Social chess playing is available for casual players to enjoy friendly games, meet fellow enthusiasts and enjoy the game without the pressure of competition.
Experienced players will be available to offer advice and guidance to those looking to enhance their skills.
Spectators and players interested in learning more about Colchester's chess scene can meet representatives of clubs.
Teachers and parents will also have the chance to find out how best to start and run a school chess club.
