The MP for Colchester says she welcomes the government's decision to open a national consultation on children's relationship with social media and mobile phones.
The announcement made by government could result in those under the age of 16 being unable to use platforms such as Facebook, TikTok and Snapchat.
It would look at options such as raising the digital age of consent and restricting potentially addictive app design features such as “streaks” and “infinite scrolling”.
There have been growing calls for the prime minister to raise the minimum age for social media platforms, and No 10 has signalled it is open to the idea.
MP for Colchester Pam Cox has expressed her backing for any decision to open a consultation on the matter.
She said: "Families across Colchester tell me they are worried about the impact social media is having on children’s wellbeing, safety and mental health.
"I hear this from parents, teachers, and from young people themselves.
"That’s why I welcome the government’s decision to open a national consultation on children’s relationship with social media and mobile phones.
"This consultation will look at a range of options including the possibility of setting a higher minimum age for accessing social media.
She continued: "It is important that we listen carefully to families, experts, and young people as we weigh up the best way to protect children while recognising the positive role technology can play.
"I strongly support the strengthened guidance making schools phone‑free by default.
"Children should not be using their phones during school time.
"This creates calmer classrooms, reduces disruption, and helps pupils to concentrate on learning.
"With Ofsted now checking mobile‑phone policies on every inspection, parents can have confidence that these rules will be applied consistently across schools in Colchester.
"I want parents and young people to have their voices heard in the national conversation about children’s safety online.
"Any decisions we take must be backed by evidence and reflect what families believe will genuinely help.
"I welcome hearing from parents and young people in Colchester.
"My priority is ensuring children in Colchester are safe, supported, and able to enjoy the opportunities of the digital world without being put at risk."
