A SOCIAL media debate between a celebrity businesswoman and a media personality has raised questions about free speech and hate speech.
On Friday, GB news panellist, publican and Essex campaigner Adam Brooks posted a question on X about the possible repercussions of sharing opinions.
He wrote: “We live in a country where saying your honest opinion out loud, can get you cancelled, sacked or even arrested. How did we get here?”
Dragons Den investor and entrepreneur Deborah Meaden responded on X with: “Examples?”
A public debate ensued, where Mr Brooks cited a link to a news story which shared how a primary school teacher was allegedly “banned for telling a Muslim child that Britain is a Christian country”.
Mr Brooks added: “Try searching people sacked for opinions on trans, immigration, religion, protests etc.
“You cannot be this stupid, or are you simply trolling?”
Ms Meaden responded: “Or, indeed, simply fact checking.”
Many X users took part in the debate, with Father Ted co-creator Graham Linehan and anti-transgender and gender-critical activist Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshull sharing their experiences of being ‘cancelled’ or contacted by police after sharing their opinions.

The Brightlingsea-born Dragon continued to engage with posts in the days of debate that followed, asking questions and acknowledging some users’ experiences.
In response to one user, Ms Meaden said: “I’m still going through the many replies and can see there are some horror stories!!
“This started as a question about free speech because I often see the argument used to allow free hate speech… which I absolutely can’t agree with but the examples contain some very damning information.”
She added her question was “on free speech versus hate speech… even if a little clumsy… or very”.
I needed time to properly read… to be fair I knew of some of them… my original tweet was to Adam Brooks because I feared his idea of free speech included calling for hotels to be burned down… but it opened another door and I’m glad it did!!

On Sunday morning, Mr Brooks shared a post on X which received more than 165,000 views and more than 4,400 likes.
“Myself & @DeborahMeaden have drawn a line under our online spat,” he said.
“We both agree it’s a good thing that such an important issue has been highlighted and seen by so many.
“Free speech must be protected, and people must be able to discuss these topics without fear of losing their jobs or even their freedom.”
