Take a look inside £6m tech hub in Queen Street Colchester

The new technology centre at 43 Queen Street is finished, Colchester Council announced on Facebook in December, 2025 that the works on the building is now complete.

The former bus depot was demolished in 2023 as part of a £6.2 million scheme to revive the site.

First Bus moved to Haven Road, leaving the building unused from 2015 until its demolition.

Work started in December 2023 and the structural framework of the building was finished in June 2025 .

The 1,200 square metre four-storey building will open next year as shared space for digital, creative and tech businesses.

Castle ward Councillor Amy Kirkby-Taylor said: "I think it is quite a nice design, a good building which fits comfortably in the historic setting

"From a design point of view, it is really nice, I want to see more buildings which have a bit of interest, rather than the bland facades you see over the place.

"It is a real shame it took as long to get the building sorted, but it is lovely to see it is now very nearly ready for use.

"I look forward to seeing it open, depending on how the hot-desking works, I may take advantage of it myself."

It has small offices, hot-desking, meeting rooms and areas for events and networking.

The project is funded by the South East Local Enterprise Partnership, government grants and Colchester Council .

Colchester Council said on Facebook at the time: “We’re delighted to bring this new workspace to the city.

“It's a fantastic building with nods to the site's heritage and some spectacular views from the upper floors.

“Our partners at Colbea will be running the building day to day, and we’re excited to see how the space develops.

“It’s packed with potential and we know the team have great plans for it.”

Ward Councillor Mark Goacher added: "It is great news it is about to open, these kinds of businesses are the future really with all the digital and tech advancements.

"In terms of the design, I think it fits in really well with Queen Street, it seems to be based on what was there before the bus depot which was at one point a theatre.

"Hopefully it will fill up with businesses."

The opening date has not yet been announced.
