Essex University Sub Zero nightclub wants to open till 4am

Sub Zero, the on-campus nightclub, has applied for a variation to the Premises Licence under the Licensing Act 2003 to allow for extended sale of alcohol to 4am on weekdays.

The venue is currently open from 11pm to 3am from Tuesday to Thursday, being open to 4am on Saturday and Sunday depending on the event.

They have also applied to be able to serve out-of-glass until 10.30pm and not have bouncers for daytime events before 9pm. 

It will also result in the closure of removal of the areas known as Base and MOA from the licence.

Colchester Council's licensing committee will be assessing the venue on October 10.

The aims of the licence is said to encourage a diversity of entertainment throughout the town centre which appeals to a wider audience and a wide range of uses.

One objection was from someone who claimed to be a former employee, who said: "I am concerned about the extension of the Sub Zero licence.

"I worked there as a door supervisor, all they do is binge drink all night.

"They become so intoxicated they cannot stand up. Also, people from outside the university go there to drink, then drive.

They also spoke of concerns over fights breaking out due to the alcohol consumption.

They continued: "When I worked there, we were not allowed to get drunk students out of the club even when a fight started.

"We were told the only people who could deal with these situations were the university welfare team which only had four on at any one time and they were only students themselves.

"So, I do not think the extension should go ahead."

We asked the student union for a comment and they said they have nothing further to add from the previous article the Gazette published on the application.
