Greater Anglia services are facing severe delays this morning after overnight engineering works between Romford and Maryland overran, causing significant disruption across multiple Essex routes.
Engineering works scheduled to complete overnight took longer than expected due to welding issues, forcing the closure of several lines between Romford and Maryland.
The problem meant all trains in the area were restricted to using just two remaining lines, creating a bottleneck that affected services across the network.
The disruption has impacted five key routes from London Liverpool Street:
- Colchester Town
- Braintree
- Clacton-on-Sea
- Ipswich
- Norwich
Network Rail engineers have since resolved the welding issue and all lines have now reopened.
However, passengers are being warned that severe congestion and delays continue to affect the Romford to Maryland corridor as services work to return to normal.
Greater Anglia advises passengers that some services may still be cancelled, delayed or revised as the operator works to restore a full timetable.
The have also apologised for the inconvenience, explaining that the technical issues with welding had prevented overnight engineering teams from completing their work on schedule.
Passengers are advised to check before they travel and allow extra time for their journeys while normal service patterns are fully restored.
