Spooky Season Festivities Underway at Colchester Zoo

The award-winning Trail of Terror returns this month, promising to be bigger and better than ever before. Since its COVID-era debut in 2020, the spine-tingling event has become one of the zoo's most successful attractions, drawing thrill-seekers from across the region year after year.

This year's event, recommended for ages 12 and over, features an expanded 1.5-mile route taking brave visitors through four terrifying zones: Chemical Spill, Swamps of New Orleans, Fright at the Movies, and Happy Hill Circus.

The zoo's in-house team has been working tirelessly since Easter to create over 150 costumes and theme the extensive route with hand-carved sculptures, painted props, and programmed lighting effects.

Fresh from winning the Thrill Nation Halloween Awards 2025 for most unique event, Trail of Terror opens on October 17, with additional dates on October 18, 24, 25, 27, 29, and 31.

The one-way experience includes a road train ride and features designated 'safe zones' where visitors can grab food and drink without fear of being frightened. The evening concludes with live DJ entertainment and refreshments.

"Our dedicated team work as zookeepers by day and scarers by night," said a zoo spokesperson.

"Each year we develop new themes and ideas to create a unique experience for both new and returning guests."

With less than two weeks until opening night, limited tickets remain available for pre-booking.

As Halloween wraps up, attention turns to the zoo's festive offerings. The Enchanted Trail of Light, Magic of Christmas, and The Santa Experience are all in preparation, promising magical experiences for visitors of all ages throughout the winter season.

Those wishing to secure their place at any of the seasonal events are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment.
