Search the Public Notice PortalESSEX University’s Students Union has applied to extend the alcohol licence of their student venue for weekdays.
SUB Zero is the only and official nightclub in the university’s Colchester Campus.
The student union has applied for a variation to the Premises Licence under the Licensing Act 2003 to allow for extended sale of alcohol to 4am on weekdays.
The venue is currently open from 11pm to 3am from Tuesday to Thursday, being open to 4am on Saturday and Sunday depending on the event.
The student union has also applied to amend the door staff requirements to start from 9pm and to amend the no-glass policy to start from 9pm.
Old venues no longer in use – specifically Base and Moa – will also be removed.
This public notice is open to feedback until September 17.
A spokesperson for the Student Union said: “We’ve applied for this change so our campus nightclub can better meet the needs and be flexible to our students and reflect how they use the venue.
“Student safety and welfare are always our top priority, and we have a range of measures in place to make sure everyone enjoys a safe night out on campus.
Ward Councillor Mark Corry said: “Research show that students are drinking and partying less.
“As a liberal, I do not have an objection to this, but would have concerns that the university take the welfare of students seriously and make sure they do not sell alcohol to those who are already too drunk. I would ask if the Students Union are supportive, as they are the democratic body led by students.
When asked about any possible impact to nearby residents, Mr Corry said: “Focusing partying on campus, in turn has a positive effect reducing late night issues in Wivenhoe or Greenstead.”
The register of licensing applications can be inspected between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday at the offices of Colchester Council in 33 Sheepen Road Colchester.
