MORE than 100 objections have been made ahead of a crunch meeting on whether organisers can set up a 1,000-capacity Irish Pub next to Leisure World.
Live Tour Promotions has applied for an alcohol licence on behalf of Molly O’Reilly’s Fun Pub, a venue which promises customers “huge bars filled with a range of Christmas drinks and a food village to tuck into” if the events go ahead next month.
Tickets have been on sale since May, but organisers may have to abandon plans for the pop-up venue if Colchester Council’s licencing committee rejects Live Tour Promotions’ application for an alcohol licence on Monday.
Meeting papers containing more than 100 objections were published by the council earlier this week ahead of the meeting, which will take place at Colchester Town Hall.
If Colchester Council grants Live Tour Promotions the alcohol licence, the pub will open on Friday, December 6 and welcome customers on 11 separate days including New Year's Eve.
Mile End councillor Martin Goss, Castle ward councillor Mark Goacher, and Colchester’s Business Improvement District (BID) submitted three of the 117 objections.
Many of the objections relate to concerns of crime and anti-social behaviour, with Mr Goss writing the event will “put the police under further strain”.
He added Instagram posts, which have previously been removed from social media, appeared to encourage binge drinking.
He wrote: “No noise prevention measures can be offered for a tent and no doubt music will be played loudly.
“I am also concerned from some advertising I have seen this establishment appears to encourage binge drinking.”
The Colchester BID objected citing the need to support “existing evening and nighttime economy venues”, adding the pub would be too far away from the SOS bus.
Forty-eight objections were also submitted after Cowdrey Avenue resident, 82-year-old Frances Hance, petitioned neighbours to support her in opposing the event.
Organisers at Live Tour Promotions have confirmed all customers will receive full refunds if Colchester Council rejects the alcohol licence application.
