MORE than 100 vehicles were checked by police in a crackdown on speeding in and around the city.

Following complaints from residents, Colchester's community policing team deployed officers to conduct speed checks in Wormingford and Mile End Road yesterday.

Of the two deployments, more than 100 vehicles were checked for their speed.

The highest speed recorded was 8mph over the speed limit, with the driver being reported to be processed whereby they could receive a fine and points.

Of the lower excess speeds, education and advice were given.

A spokesman said: "Speed is a significant factor in the level of injury that can be caused when a collision occurs and adhering to speed limits helps keep people safe on the roads."
