Colchester Council has announced the temporary closure of the city’s natural history museum, after a section of stone fell from the building’s tower last weekend.
Following the incident, the museum will be closed ‘until further notice’ for building and safety inspections.
A spokesperson for Colchester City Council said: “Early last Saturday morning, a section of masonry came away from the tower of the Natural History Museum, causing damage to the pitched roof below.
“Our priority is ensuring the safety of the public and everyone involved.
“We are working closely with contractors to secure the site.
“The scaffolding is to facilitate further investigation to assess the nature of the repairs required.
“In the interest of public safety, the museum will remain closed until further notice.
“We understand the impact this may have on visitors and the community, and we appreciate your understanding and patience as we address this situation.
“Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”
