THE man who killed a teenage girl when he was speeding in a residential street will have to live with his actions for the rest of his life, a police officer has said.
Daniel Chappell was driving at 39.5mph in a 30mph zone when he hit 17-year-old Alliyah Bell in Hythe Hill, Colchester, in 2021.
He denied causing death by careless driving but was convicted unanimously by a jury sitting at Chelmsford Crown Court this week.
Det Insp Mark Fraser, of Essex Police’s serious collision investigation unit, said the teenager's death was a needless tragedy.
He said: “Alliyah’s tragic death was avoidable - she was a young woman and had her whole life ahead of her.
“She was a daughter, a sister and a niece and I know her loss is felt by her family and friends each and every day.
“Chappell could have avoided this tragedy.
"He was speeding in a residential street in the early hours of the morning, giving himself almost no chance to react before the incident and, sadly, this resulted in his driving taking the life of a young woman and he will have to live with this for the rest of his life.”
