EVERGREEN powerlifter Mick Amey has made history after smashing several world records at the British Nationals.
The 74-year-old from Copford was in outstanding form at the World Drug-free Powerlifting Federation event held at the Arnold Academy in Burton le Clay, just outside Milton Keynes.
Amey is now the federation’s world record holder for Masters five, Masters six and Masters seven, achieving the feat at five-year intervals.
He will move up to the Masters eight category later this month, when he turns 75.
He said: “It was an amazing feeling.
“In this federation, I am now the world record holder and I’ve set a massive history, because they haven’t got anybody who’s lifted anything like these weights, at my age.
“The crowd were amazing and it was a packed house – I think that pushed me on even more.
“When I pulled that last dead lift at 205, the whole place erupted.
“I set four new world records all in one day and those records are also European and British records.
“I think this is my biggest-ever achievement but I couldn’t have done it without my sons, Ashley who’s been my coach all the way through and Daniel, who coaches me at the gym; they were amazing as was Stewart Cowan, who has been with me throughout and takes me everywhere and is so supportive.
“The people at the Energyze Gym in Greenstead Road were also fantastic in supporting me and my wife Mary, too – we’ve been married for 56 years!
“I’m so proud of myself to actually be doing this at my time of life and setting these records!”
Amey started the competition by three times breaking the squat world record, which prior to the competition was 160 kilos.
His first squat with 162 kilos, before he progressed to 170 and then an outstanding 180.
Amey then moved on to the bench press, where the world record stood at 75 kilos.
He opened with 90 and then broke the world record again, with 100 kilos.
Amey concluded his incredible competition with the dead lift and a first pull of 180 kilos, which automatically gave him a world record total.
He then pulled 205 kilos, another world record effort, securing him a world record total of 485 kilos as the talented powerlifter completed a memorable competition in style.
