THREE people were sent to hospital after a crash between two vehicles on a Colchester road this morning.

A collision on Lexden Road this morning partially blocked the stretch of road between Church Lane and Glen Avenue.

Essex Police confirmed the collision was between a bus and a stationary van and officers were called to close the road at around 6.30am.

The ambulance service issued an update on the people involved.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called just after 6.30am to a road traffic collision involving a bus and a stationary van on Lexden Road in Colchester.

"Four ambulances and an ambulance officer vehicle were sent to the scene.

"Ten occupants of the bus were assessed and three required being taken to Colchester General Hospital for further assessment and treatment.”

Thankfully no serious injuries have been reported.

Piers Marlow, Managing Director of First Bus East of England, confirms the company will be conducting a full investigation into the incident.

He said: “A X20 bus has been involved in an incident in Colchester this morning (9th September).

“The safety and well-being of our customers, drivers and the public is our number one priority, and we are conducting a full investigation to determine the cause of the incident. We are also assisting Essex Police with their enquiries into the incident.”

Councillor Dennis Willetts, ward councillor for Lexden and Braiswick,

He said: "It's very unfortunate that this has happened - the problem we have is Lexden Road is the A1124.

"It's a road carrying some 15k vehicles a day so every junction is potentially dangerous.

"Now the junction with Spring Lane North is even more dangerous than most junctions as it is hemmed in by listed buildings on each side and there are insufficient sidelines.

"On these junctions at times drivers can get very impatient caused by the delays in traffic hours.

"This is a problem which has been reported many times.

"When I reported it three years ago the only possible solution was a mini roundabout but there is insufficient space to put one in at that location."

Kate Bell, a Colchester resident is calling for more to be done about safety on Lexden Road.

She said: "Colchester City Council please slow the traffic down at the junction.

"Residents of Spring Lane have been saying this for years, exiting from Spring Lane is so dangerous and we're always ignored.

"It's only going to get worse if the proposed housing development goes ahead at The Old Rectory & Little Glebe.

"It's such a dangerous junction.

"Lexden Road crossroads with Church Lane and Spring Lane need a speed camera or at least get the road lines repainted."
