WHEN Tayo By Bien opened in Colchester last year it became one of the only Filipino restaurants in the east of England.
The traditional Filipino restaurant, which relaunched its menu in February, has been serving up authentic dishes alongside modern fusion cuisine.
We tried a flavourful breakfast when we visited the restaurant in North Hill.
Decorated with paper ornaments and plants, the restaurant space has plenty of seating with comfy chairs, cushions and plenty of table space.
The restaurant also supplies high chairs for families with young children.
There are two multi-story car parks a short walk away, as well as on-road disabled parking opposite the restaurant.
I ordered Tayo’s breakfast filo muffin, which included a choice of three meats, fried egg, and mayonnaise or banana ketchup in a soft bread muffin.
After speaking to one of the restaurant’s helpful waitresses, for guidance on the meat choices, I opted for tocino – a Filipino meat similar to pork.
To accompany the dish, I ordered a side of avocado fries and an apple juice.
The food was served quickly and well portioned.
This was my first time trying Filipino cuisine, and I was pleasantly surprised at the sweet and flavoursome tocino.
The avocado fries were served with a small pot of ketchup and a small pot of mayonnaise, which contrasted nicely with the saltiness of the fries.
The staff were polite and helpful, and played music throughout – which positively impacted the experience.
The atmosphere is laid back, cosy and unique, offering a slice of the Philippines to Colchester’s community.
The entire meal, including one main, one side and one drink, cost an even £12.
I believe the food is very reasonably priced for the flavour, presentation, portion size and service provided.
I will definitely be returning to Tay By Bien, and highly recommend giving it a go.
