A PIONEERING gym which claims it is the first in the UK to offer its facilities for free has opened in Colchester.
CLCS Gym is now open to the public in Crouch Street.
The gym claims it is the first in the UK supporting low-income individuals, benefit claimants, refugees, and those seeking asylum.
This pioneering initiative aims to remove financial barriers to fitness, offering free access through referrals from NHS professionals and organisations.
For those who do not qualify for free membership, memberships starts at £8.99.
David Simmons, Co-Director of CLCS Gym, said: "We believe that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, should have access to fitness and well-being resources, our goal is to empower individuals through health and fitness, creating a space where everyone can thrive.”
The project has also garnered support from Colchester Council, which has invested £10,000 into the initiative.
Councillor Natalie Sommers praised the gym’s role in promoting health and aiding the integration of asylum seekers and refugees.
She said: “I'm delighted to see CLCS Gym open its doors, offering a vital service to our community.
"This groundbreaking initiative, the first of its kind in the UK, is a testament to our commitment to promoting health and well-being for all, including those who may be facing additional challenges.
“As part of our Resettlement Work, we're particularly pleased to support Asylum Seekers and Refugees in accessing this space, which will not only help improve their physical health but also play a crucial role in their integration into our community.
“The council's investment of £10,000 demonstrates our unwavering support for this project and our belief in its potential to make a positive impact on the lives of our residents. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity and join us in celebrating this milestone for our community.”
Ronni Harrison, physical navigator for Colchester, added: "I am thrilled to see a new space open in our town offering a free or low-cost exercise programme supporting our most vulnerable.
"It's a brilliant initiative and I hope to see this grow across the UK."
