A police cordon was set in place on an A12 slip road near Colchester to assist highway maintenance teams after fuel was spilled.
Officers from Essex Police had closed the slip road near Junction 27 off Cymbeline Way in the late afternoon after fuel had been spilled on the southbound carriageway.
The Gazette understands the road was cordoned off to facilitate highway vehicles to clear the remains of the fuel, which had caused traffic jams throughout the day.
Traffic had backed up significantly and a police escort helped to make sure the maintenance vehicles could reach the spillage and clean the road.
The cordon was removed shortly after it had been put in place.
