RESIDENTS have been given a first look at what the £12 million redevelopment of St Botolph's roundabout could look like.
Drivers, pedestrians and cyclists can take a look into the future with a new virtual reality video showing what the major roundabout could look like after being transformed.
Essex Highways has released an ‘fly-through’ video showing the vision for St Botolph’s circus to make it better for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
The video shows what people can expect once the works are completed.
The design includes dedicated cycle lanes and crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists.
There are also pedestrian zones with potential pop-up cafes.
The video also shows a change to the lanes when approaching Osborne Street and Britannia car park.
The video has been developed with the help of more than 2,000 locals following a consultation by Essex County and Colchester Council.
Kevin Bentley, leader of Essex County Council, said: “I’m thrilled that thanks to Team Colchester people can now enjoy a detailed look into the future of St Botolph’s Circus.
“We have listened to the people and brought their ideas to life. I am proud of our commitment to Colchester.
“From St Botolph’s Circus to the £120 million package to transform the city’s transport links, we are unified and committed in meeting the community’s needs for today and for the decades to come.”
The vision includes new plaza areas with an emphasis on accessibility and finding a balance between pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
David King, leader of Colchester Council, said: “This fabulous 'fly-through' video marks a pivotal moment in our journey to revitalise St Botolph’s Circus.
“This preview offers a remarkable glimpse of the exciting future ahead, sparking anticipation for the grand unveiling and what will follow.
“Team Colchester's joint aim is to create a gateway to the city in which we can all take pride.”
The redevelopment is set out to pave the way for an array of other projects, including plans for a travel interchange and a heritage walking route leading from St Botolph’s Circus to Colchester Castle, aiming to boost visitor numbers to explore the area and its history.
It is also set to complement the ongoing work for the rapid transit system in the city, connecting the A12 Park and Ride to the University of Essex campus and planned Garden Community.
