A POLCIE investigation has been launched after a woman pushing a buggy said someone had attempted to steal her bag.
The incident took place near to the Hythe Quay before 1.30pm on Saturday, being reported to Essex Police shortly before 2pm.
The report said that the man had approached a mother who was pushing a buggy and had tried to steal her handbag, which was hanging on the buggy.
Officers from the Colchester Local Policing Team (LPT) quickly acted on the information provided and identified a suspect who was still in the area.
A man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and taken into custody, where he remains.
