THE Essex Book Festival celebrated its 25th anniversary at the University of Essex as a procession of silk flags were marched through campus.
The 2024 Essex Book Festival was launched on June 1 at the Colchester Campus of the University of Essex.
The event marked both the 25th anniversary of the festival and the 60th anniversary of the university.
The event started with a procession of silk flags, also known as pennants, created for the Beach of Dreams installation by arts organisation Kinetika.
The flags, which were created by communities and volunteers around Essex, were carried by volunteers from St Leonard’s Church on Hythe Hill and planted in the ground outside the Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall.
The Walk with Words team, dressed yellow, also attended a new scheme which links together the city centre, Greenstead, and the University with 16 roadside-style posts on the pavement.
Dr Sarah Perry, chancellor of the University of Essex, said: “As Chancellor, and patron of the Festival and Essex girl and Essex author, it’s incredibly exciting to see the University and the community coming together to affirm the rich history and tradition of Essex.
“As a county, the importance of the arts and humanities in university education, and all the richness and wonderful things that the art in Essex has to offer."
