It's by no means recent, but Colchester's impressive scene for music, arts, and culture continues to grow.

I've showcased thousands of events through the Keep Colchester Cool project I launched in 2009.

Now, I'll bring the best events to you each week which I recommend checking out.

Here are my five recommendations for music, arts, and culture in Colchester in the week ahead.

The UK's first all-female tribute to Deep Purple, consisting of five of the country's top musicians, returns to Three Wise Monkeys in Colchester on Saturday.

Performing the Deep Purple classics from a new perspective, Diva Purple brings you the hits, including Speed King, Highway Star, Strange Kind of Woman, Child in Time, Smoke on the Water, and more.

Elaine Barker and Vince Rayner have been at the helm of Colchester Folk Club for much of its 60-year history.

On Sunday, join them in conversation with Dr Anthony Roberts at Colchester Arts Centre. Elaine and Vince will discuss personal highlights of the last 60 years, anecdotes, and memories from the club's long history.

It is free admission and doors open 11am.

Drink and Draw at the Odd One Out on Tuesday. This event is for everyone, whether you think you can't draw or you think you can.

All you need is a pencil, paper, and a thirst for creativity. Don't worry about your skill level, just bring your enthusiasm and some money for beers.

Starts at 7pm and it is free entry.

The SoapGirls' energy and rawness have earned them a formidable reputation. The duo writes outsider anthems that are androgynous, audacious and straight from the heart.

Armed with unforgettable melodies and catchy choruses, they perform at Coda on Thursday, supported by local band Male Model.

It starts at 7.30pm. Advance tickets cost £9 and £12 on the door.

X Trillion is a feature documentary about an all-female crew's harrowing journey through the notorious Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

The film chronicles the arduous 3,000-mile voyage of Exxpedition's all-women team, led by Colchester's Emily Penn.

It's being shown at Firstsite on Friday, followed by a Q&A with Jo Coldwell, Professor Leanne Hepburn, Pam Cox, and Eleanor Church.
