The Hemel Hempstead Crematorium has been heaped with praise while being 'Highly Commended’ by the Civic Trust Awards.

Awardees are recognised for eco-friendly, architectural and design feats, with the crematorium being one of 68 to be honoured from 320 nominations worldwide.

It recognised outstanding elements such as the crematorium's "unique" design and efforts to provide a tranquil, all-embracing space for those in mourning.

Owned and managed by the West Herts Crematorium Joint Committee, the crematorium enjoyed praises from the awards judges, who said: "This is a high-quality and well-crafted building, and it was obvious from our visit that there had been a strong working relationship between architect and client."

Its design optimises natural light and scenic views, creating an apt setting for the 140-person chapel and the separate pavilion dedicated for memorials.

Notably, the structure's configuration, which places the lectern slightly off-centre, is designed to promote a sense of intimacy, irrespective of the size of the service.

Impressive landscaping, comprising memorial gardens, woodland areas, and manicured grass paths, mesh seamlessly with the design and furthers the sense of a tranquil and well-organised space to the staff and visitors.

Cllr David Major, chair of the West Herts Crematorium Joint Committee, said: "The crematorium's 'Highly Commended' recognition by the Civic Trust Awards celebrates not only architectural excellence but also a deep commitment to creating a serene and inclusive space for all.

"Its integration with the natural landscape and thoughtful design elements stand as a testament to its significance as a place of solace and remembrance."

Councillor Aga Dychton, deputy mayor and portfolio holder for community at Watford Borough Council, added: "Acknowledged among 320 global projects, the crematorium's commendation highlights its exceptional design and eco-friendly credentials, as well as its dedication to providing a dignified setting for mourners.

"The collaboration between the architect and West Herts Crematorium Joint Committee shines through, reflecting a shared vision for a facility that seamlessly merges with its surroundings, offering solace amidst nature."
