A WORKINGTON man who stole £27,000 in cash from his grandmother has been warned he could be jailed.

Kevin Teasdale, 38, entered his guilty plea to the offence when he appeared before a judge at Carlisle Crown Court. The charge states that he committed the offence on April 4 in Workington.

No further details of the offence were outlined in court.

But defence barrister Marion Weir, for Teasdale, who arrived at court walking with the aid of a crutch, said that the defendant was affected by physical injuries which included a brain injury.

She said a letter had been written for the court about the case by the defendant’s parents and there was also a letter from the victim, Teasdale’s grandmother. “The other issue is the cash which was seized,” said Miss Weir.

The stolen money was yet to be counted and returned to the victim, she said. The barrister added: “He hasn’t spent any of it at all.”

Judge Michael Fanning adjourned the case until May 31 so that a pre-sentence report can be prepared about the defendant, whose address was given as Farmoss, Northside, Workington.

“I don’t rule out any [sentencing] option,” said the judge. He granted the defendant bail on condition that he stays away from the victim and from the street in Workington where she lives.

He told the defendant: “Mr Teasdale, you have pleaded guilty and you will get credit for that. You will come back to be sentenced on May 31. Be sure to be there and keep your appointment [with the Probation Service].”

From the dock of the court, the defendant said he was “really sorry” for the inconvenience he had caused to everybody.

The judge responded with: “The person who needs your apology ultimately is your grandmother.”
