RUNNERS braved the rain as they took on the Colchester Zoo Stampede at the weekend.

The 10k race took place around the zoo, in Maldon Road, and its surrounding roads on April 28.

Runners braved the conditions as they took part supported by their loved ones.

The race is like no other as runners get to animal spot as they run.

The race allowed participants a chance to compete on a unique course as well as raising money for the zoo's charity, Colchester Zoological Society, and independent charity  Mid and North East Essex Mind.

The charity, formerly known as Action for the Wild, provides support for conservation research by providing financial and technical assistance as well as raising awareness for the community conservation programmes.

Mind is a mental health charity dedicated to enhancing well-being by promoting mental health awareness, reducing stigma, and offering practical assistance to individuals facing mental health challenges.

Participants also received free entry to Colchester Zoo on race day, valued at £28.50, allowing them to explore the wonders of wildlife and the zoo's incredible species.

A spokesman for Colchester Zoo said: “Well done to all the runners of the Stampede this Sunday! Despite the weather you all crossed the finish line with a smile on your face.

"A donation for each entry to the Stampede is made to our charity, Colchester Zoological Society, helping to support vital conservation projects worldwide including the UmPhafa Conservation Trust in South Africa.

"A huge thank you to everyone who participated in the event, your amazing efforts help to make a difference caring for wildlife and wild places.”
