Merseyside Magic

As the premier league reaches its end for the 23/24 season Everton have done the unimaginable and beaten rivals Liverpool for the first time at home ground Goodison park since October 2010. As an Everton fan myself I cannot remember the last time I saw Everton beat Liverpool at home.

Everton have a miserable record in the Merseyside Derby, with Liverpool winning most of the encounters. The win for Everton could not have come at a better time as they fight to try and stay up in the premier league. The win has also put a dent into Liverpool’s title race as Arsenal are now 3 points clear and 2 points behind Manchester City who have a game in hand over Liverpool.

Everton have bounced back from a below average performance against Chelsea where they lost 6-0. After the game Sean Dyche said that he would be reevaluating the structure of training and how the team did things and whatever Sean Dyche has done seems to have given Everton a new lease of life as they are now on a 2-match winning streak after beating Nottingham Forest 2-0 on Sunday 21st and Liverpool 2-0 on Wednesday 24th.

Liverpool had 77% of the possession but missed vital shots that could have got them ahead in the game with them getting 23 shots in the game and only 7 on target. Everton took advantage of Liverpool not finishing their chances with a 27th minute goal by Everton Defender Jarrad Branthwaite which put them 1-0 up in the derby. Everton then went on to defend countless Liverpool chances for the rest of the first half making it to half time with a 1-0 advantage on Liverpool.

As the second half began both teams were trading shots on goal, but nothing came until the 58th minute when Everton striker Calvert Lewin led the ball into the net with an incredible header that nestled into the bottom corner of the Liverpool goal. After the second goal Liverpool made 3 substitutions bringing Jones, Konate and Szoboszlai off and bringing Elliot, Endo and Jarell Amorin Quansah on. More subs were made for both teams and chances were exchanged however Everton managed to hold on to the 2-0 advantage and made history winning the first Merseyside derby at home since October 2010.

This was a vital 3 points for the toffies leading into the 5:30 kickoff against Brentford which if Everton win could mean they have avoided relegation for yet another season.
