ABOUT 3,000 children in Colchester's Scouting units marched to Castle Park to celebrate St George's Day.

Dave Reid, Scouting Division leader for Colchester, said youngsters in the Scouting Units attended the march including Guides, Scouts, and Cadets.

The parade began at St Britannia Car Park at 2pm on Sunday and finished with a short service at 3pm in Castle Park where young leaders and volunteers were given awards.

The parade was held after a church service at Colchester's St Botolph Church at 10.30am led by Bishop Roger Morris.

Dave said that this was the first year new signage was given out for young people and leaders to hold during the parade to help parents find their children's unit.

He said: "It was a great event and great to see everyone out and about.

"There were 45 marshals who volunteered for that day only so without them the parade would not happen."

Dave added that the main thing Colchester Scouting is looking for is "more sponsorship" with the St George's Day Parade costing between £2k and £3k due to blocked roads.

Dave added: "Volunteers are always needed from cooking at camp to helping at races to taking minutes at meetings to maintenance on the scout huts.

"You don’t have to be there every week which people think you do, as volunteering is supposed to be flexible."
