The Ford RideLondon Classique returns to Colchester for an exciting day of professional women's cycling.

Colchester Council has organised a free spectator zone from 11am on Friday, May 24 allowing spectators to cheer on racers at the final stretch of the race's opening stage.

This event marks the third year in a row that Colchester has hosted the Ford RideLondon Classique.

The spectator zone, nestled in the heart of Castle Park, guarantees a lively atmosphere during the UCI Women's World Tour event.

The occasion also offers an array of fun activities and refreshment options.

Schools are welcome to participate in colour and logo design contests to cultivate and display students' artistic talents relating to the event.

Community and sports groups, including Essex Pedal Power, The Dry Skate Project, and the Essex County Council mobile library, will be on the ground to offer entertainment and information on their activities, with others to be announced.

The race sets off from Saffron Walden at 11am, with cyclists expected to cross the finish line on East Hill, Colchester around 3pm.

Spectators are encouraged to watch the grand finale in-person on East Hill and catch a sight of the world-class competitors pass Colchester Castle after the race.

David King, leader of Colchester Council, said: "It’s great that Colchester has again been selected to host another first-class cycling event.

"This will be an exciting gathering, a colourful spectacle we can all support, an opportunity to cheer on world class cyclists as they cross the finish line in our vibrant city.

"In late spring, when the weather should be beautiful, I cannot think of a better way to kick off the bank holiday weekend."

The event will see 20 of the world's elite cycling teams participating.

Among the big-name contenders is Charlotte Kool, 2024 Classique champion and winner in Colchester 12 months ago.

Others include world champion Lotte Kopecky and British cycling star Lizzie Deignan, a silver medallist from the London 2012 Olympic Games and former world champion.

The race will continue on May 25 in Maldon, before concluding on May 26 on The Mall, following eight laps of central London.
