A GROUP of friends have taken on a running challenge to help vital charity work and beat exam stress.

Scarlett Johnston, Lottie Boulter, Sophia Nock and Fleur Langmead, all aged 16, will take on the 10K Stampede run at Colchester Zoo.

The quartet, from Colchester, have taken up the challenge for Mid and North East Essex Mind in what will be the longest run they've ever attempted.

They are all GCSE students at The Stanway School.

Scarlett, who has organised the fundraiser, said: "So many young people struggle with their mental health and it’s difficult to find the right support.

"We believe that public services don’t always have the right resources to provide enough help for young people, which often leaves them distressed until they reach a point of crisis.

"People shouldn’t have to reach this level of desperation, nobody should be alone with their struggles: that’s why we’re determined to raise as much money as possible for Mid and North East Essex Mind."

The girls have a fundraising goal of £700 for the event, which will be held on Sunday, April 28.

The annual Stampede offers entrants the unique opportunity of running past elephants, giraffes, and zebras at the zoo, along with a route which meanders through nearby villages and countryside before finishing back at the zoo.

Ginny Idehen, the CEO of Mid and North East Essex Mind, said: "We’ve been overwhelmed by the response from fundraisers to this year’s Stampede.

"Everyone in the community has come out to support this fun event and we’re really pleased to see four young students, using their training runs to help reduce stress.

"Exercise is brilliant for our general fitness, but it also helps us release happy hormones, which is great for our mental health."

Beyond the personal achievement and the cause, those taking on the Stampede stand to gain a free wildlife-themed runners’ vest, a commemorative medal, free event photos, and an invitation to a post-event drinks reception.

For a £17 registration fee and after raising £50, participants can also enjoy a free day at Colchester Zoo, with discounted entry extended to friends and family.
