TWO people have been arrested and a police probe launched after a baby died in Colchester.

Emergency services rushed to the scene in North Station Road yesterday morning following concerns for the welfare of the infant.

Essex Police officers were called to the site before the baby was taken to hospital by paramedics, where it sadly later died.

The force has now confirmed an investigation into the incident has been launched and two people have been arrested.

A full statement reads: “Officers are investigating the death of a baby in Colchester.

“We were called to a property in North Station Road, Colchester, by colleagues in the ambulance service shortly after 6.15am on Tuesday, April 2, following concerns for the welfare of a baby.

“The five-month-old was taken to hospital, but has, sadly, died.

“Their death is being treated as unexpected and will be further investigated.

“A 23-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child and released under investigation whilst our enquiries continue.”

The Gazette has been told emergency services were called to temporary accommodation at Seatrade House, with heavy police presence having been spotted in the area.

Colchester Borough Homes is understood to have met with the accommodation provider with workers also supporting residents on the site.

A spokesman for Colchester Council’s housing arm added it is “deeply saddened” by the incident and said its “thoughts are with the family and all those affected at this difficult time”.
