FOR those looking to wet their beak or enjoy a relaxing tipple, the historic town of Wivenhoe has an array of brilliant pubs to visit.

The town was recently announced as the best place to live in the East of England in The Sunday Times’s Best Places to Live guide.

Self-described as “a small drinking town with a fishing problem”, however, it’s also a great place for a pint.

So if you’re thinking of visiting, here’s a list of some of the most popular pubs in Wivenhoe.

Rose and Crown

Known as one of the oldest pubs in the town, this pub was built in the 1700s.

The Greene King-owned establishment is dog-friendly and has a selection of drinks and food available.

It also has outside seating which is ideal during the summer as you can take in an unmatched view of the River Colne given the pub’s location.

Where: The Quay

Opening times: Monday to Friday 9.30am to 11pm, and Sundays 9.30am to 10.30pm.

The Greyhound

The Greyhound is a family-run pub which prides itself on serving a vast selection of real ales, beer, and wines.

Its meals are freshly prepared, and the ingredients are locally sourced.

It’s another cosy pub which is dog friendly, and it even supports Wivenhoe Town Football Club.

Opening times: Monday to Saturday 12pm to 11pm, Sunday 12pm to 9pm

The Black Buoy

The pub was re-named The Black Buoy in 1912 by its landlord at the time, Captain William Ennew, to reflect on his career and make it maritime themed.

The pub dates to the early 1700s as well.

Where: Black Buoy Hill

Opening times: Sunday to Thursday 12pm to 10pm, Friday and Saturday noon to 11pm.

The Horse and Groom

This Wivenhoe pub originally started out as The King’s Arms which first started trading in 1772.

Since them, The Horse and Groom has served drinks, food, and entertainment to the people of the town for many years.

Where: The Cross

Opening times: Tuesday to Thursday 11.30am to 3.30pm then from 5.30pm to 10pm.

Friday and Saturday 11.30am to 11pm and Sunday 12pm to 8pm.
