A spokesman for the force added: “We were called to reports of a single-vehicle collision on the westbound carriageway of the A120, near Great Dunmow, at about 10.10am on Thursday, March 27.

“Our officers closed the road in both directions while emergency services worked at the scene.

“We do not believe any other vehicles were involved and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

An air ambulance landed on the Braintree-bound carriageway after the fatal collision.

Drivers were warned to avoid the area, with police officers at the time describing the closure of the road as “critical”.

One motorist said traffic in both directions ground to a halt for about 90 minutes before the road fully re-opened towards Braintree.

National Highways confirmed on social media that the Stansted-bound carriageway re-opened just before 2.15pm.
