A 23-year-old who failed to pay for a train ticket and then ignored an unpaid fares notice has been ordered to pay £510.

Keigan Scott, of Secundus Court, Colchester, had been travelling from Manchester to Nottingham in June last year, but didn’t pay the £52.50 fare.

When he was approached by a member of staff, Scott told them he couldn’t pay.

Scott was then issued with what is known as an unpaid fare notice, which would have given him permission to travel and pay the fare within 21 days.

But Scott failed to make the payment and he was then issued with a fixed penalty notice.

After Scott ignored that as well, the case was brought before magistrates in Manchester on March 1.

Proving the case in Scott’s absence, magistrates ordered Scott to repay the £52.50, as well as an £88 surcharge and £150 in costs.

A further fine of £220 was also imposed, meaning Scott must pay an overall fine of £510.50.

The order follows a previous case when Scott failed to pay a £2.40 fare for a train journey between Edge Hill station to Liverpool Lime Street, also in June 2023.

Scott was ordered to pay £460.40 for that offence.
