COLCHESTER Zoo has announced the sad death of its 27-year-old male white rhino, Otto.

Otto, the much-loved rhino and visitor-favourite, passed away today, March 22, during a veterinary procedure requiring anaesthesia.

A statement from Colchester Zoo said: "Otto was under veterinary observation which ultimately led us to have to further investigate via general anaesthesia.

"Unfortunately, Otto passed away whilst under anaesthesia despite all best efforts to help him."

The long-standing resident was born in 1997, arriving at Colchester Zoo in 2009 from Knuthenborg Safari Park in Bandholm, Denmark.

During his 15 years at Colchester Zoo, Otto sired six calves with his latest offspring, Dara, born on January 13, 2023.

In 2017, Otto was taken to Woburn Safari Park in Milton Keynes to see if he would mate with the female rhinos there.

After his unfortunately unsuccessful holiday, he returned to Colchester Zoo in 2018.

On his return, he was able to meet his new son whom he sired with fellow Colchester rhino, Emily, as well as meet and mate with new addition, Astrid.

White Rhinos are currently listed as ‘Near Threatened’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, meaning Otto played a vital role in the conservation of his species.

Colchester Zoo is home to five other White Rhinos, Emily, Binta, Astrid, Tayo and Dara.

"It’s always difficult when an animal passes away," the zoo said.

"Especially one with a big personality that has been at the zoo for so many years, they truly are one of the family.

"Otto leaves a huge hole in our hearts, but we have many cherished memories of him which will last forever.

"Our Animal Care Team are currently processing the loss of their beloved friend and would like to thank everyone for their support during this difficult time."
