COLCHESTER has been named as one of the friendliest cities in the UK, according to new research.

Train company LNER has analysed data from the UK’s Office for National Statistics to determine the nicest places in the country.

Researchers have looked at the personal wellbeing of residents on the level of hospitality in the UK’s biggest town and cities.

They then weighted the gathered information against the population to calculate scores out of 100.

Colchester has been named as the 9th friendliest, with a score of 68.1.

Research showed the city's residents express high levels of life satisfaction, ranking third with a score of 77.8 out of 100.

However, it boasts a relatively lower ratio of five-star rated restaurants and hotels per capita, standing at 46 per 100,000 people.

Claire Ansley, customer experience director at LNER, said: “Apart from culture, attractions, and surroundings, one of the most important factors when choosing a destination to visit is the hospitality of its people.

“From striking up conversations in a local pub to receiving an act of kindness from strangers, visiting somewhere where locals are welcoming and affable can make a huge difference in your travel experience.”

“Whether you’re looking for a solo city break or family vacation, our research reveals the friendliest destinations in the UK, where visitors will receive an especially warm welcome as they make memories and enjoy their travel experiences."
