DOUBLE Olympic gold medallist turned Colchester MP hopeful James Cracknell OBE will be taking part in a long-standing charity event.

Mr Cracknell, 51, who was selected as Colchester's parliamentary candidate in September 2023, will be participating in the next Maldon Mud Race.

The historic event began in 1974 and this year's edition will be held on June 2 in Maldon's Promenade Park.

Also taking part will be Simon Ferrier, a liaison officer at national charity the Army Benevolent Fund.

Founded in 1944, the Army Benevolent Fund provides support to soldiers, veterans and their families when they are in need.

Mr Ferrier said: “I’ve taken part in many different types of events in the past, but nothing quite like this. I am very much looking forward to taking on the challenge.

"Even though the race is short, it is a test of endurance to keep going in the mud.”

The event will feature about 300 entrants raising money for a range of charities.

Mud Race organisers have given the Army Benevolent Fund the chance to offer free entry to serving personnel, veterans and cadets aged 16 or older.

All monies raised will be split 50 per cent to the Army Benevolent Fund and the other 50 per cent to the Mud Race charities for 2024.

Those interested can enter the Mud Race as an individual or in a team.
