COLCHESTER'S youngest councillor has been praised for her “great work” after deciding to hand in her resignation.

Molly Bloomfield was elected as a Labour councillor for Greenstead in May 2022 while still a student at Essex University.

Earlier this week, however, the Gazette was informed Miss Bloomfield had decided to resign after almost two years in the role.

Since then her fellow councillors have commended Miss Bloomfield for her time as part of Colchester Council.

Pam Cox, Labour councillor for the New Town and Christ Church ward, said: “I’ve really enjoyed working with Molly.

“She did some great work in Greenstead and brought a fresh perspective to local politics.

Along with the Labour Group of councillors, I’m sorry to see her go but very grateful to her for her time with us and wish her all the best.”

David King, leader of Colchester Council, is also sad to see her go.

He said: “The council is the better for a mix of personalities, age and experience.

“So, it was good to have Molly with us and it's a shame she has resigned less than two years from election. We wish her well.”

Bosses at Colchester Council have said a by-election could be scheduled for May 2 if nominations are received.

Councillor Molly Bloomfield has been approached for comment.
