A PERSON had to be taken to hospital following a serious crash which shut down the A12 in Colchester and left motorists stuck for two hours.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a two-vehicle crash on the Londonbound carriageway near the Colchester United stadium at 10am today.

Paramedics, police officers and firefighters were all called to the incident with a road closure being put in place and all lanes being closed.

Shortly after arriving, firefighters worked to free a woman found trapped in one of the vehicle's involved in the smash.

“Crews worked with the ambulance service to rescue her by 11.06am and left her in the care of paramedics,” a spokesman for the fire service said.

According to the ambulance service, which sent one ambulance to the incident, one person was taken to Colchester Hospital for further care.

Two other people, meanwhile, were assessed and discharged at the scene.

Resident Anna Nichol said: "Another day, another accident - I hope everyone is okay."

The crash caused severe traffic in the area, with queues of motorists backing up past Junction 29 at Ardleigh at its peak.

By about 11.30am, one lane had reopened, with Essex Police working with Essex Highways to fully reopen the road.

The road was fully reopened by about midday, with traffic slowly easing.

The smash is the second on the A12 in just the last few weeks.

Three people were taken to hospital following a serious crash in the morning of February 20 between Junction 27 and Junction 28 on the Londonbound carriageway.

Speaking at the time, Colchester council leader and Mile End councillor David King said he was “very concerned” about another accident at the same location, where previous crashes had caused delays and disruption.

He added: “I’m sure Essex Highways and their counterpart will look at the data, location and causes with Essex Police and others to see if there is there anything that can be learned from the condition of the road.

“It’s important we ensure the roads are as safe as possible.”
