A BUILDING once used by a bank could be demolished and turned into flats if plans are approved.

An application has been submitted to Colchester Council to transform 10 Yorick Road, in West Mersea, into nine new homes with 22 car parking spaces and 12 cycle spaces.

It was previously home to Barclays bank, which closed its doors in June last year, leaving the site vacant.

Developers want to build eight two-bedroom flats and one one-bedroom flat on the site, turning it into a two-storey apartment block with a hipped roof structure.

The first floor of the former bank is currently used as a residential flat which remains in use at the time of the application.

The design plans include soft red brick with natural Spanish slate roof tiles, while windows would be timber painted white.

Within the planning application, a spokesman said: “We believe that the proposal will enhance the amenity value of the immediate area whilst preserving the surrounding Mersea feel.

“We believe we have produced a high-quality form of development having regard to location and end use.”

Colchester Council will have the final say.
