A LARGE tree which teenagers have been seen dangerously climbing on after it toppled into a Colchester river is finally being removed... months after it fell.

Strong winds from Storm Henk caused a big tree to fall into the River Colne near Middleborough and North Station Road just above North Bridge, on January 2.

More than two months on and the tree still currently remains in the water, with residents questioning when it will be completely removed.

Some have even claimed to have seen youngsters walking on the fallen tree, despite the dangers doing so might pose.

Bosses at Colchester Council have now confirmed the authority is aware of the tree and have moved to reassure residents action is being taken.

A spokesman for the council said: “Our team started work on the removal of the tree located across the River Colne near North Station Road yesterday, with the goal of clearing the majority of the tree from the river as soon as possible.

"We will need to return to clear the main stems when the river level drops, as these are currently underwater.

"Unfortunately, we do not know exactly when this will be and we'll be monitoring water levels until the work can be completed safely.

"This is not a straightforward task, as the tree is straddling the river, requiring extra care and attention from our team.

"Despite the challenges, work is progressing well, and we are committed to completing the removal as efficiently and safely as possible.

"We appreciate the patience and understanding of the public as we work to address this issue.”

The development has now been welcomed by council leader David King who says “it is great to see the work being done".

Castle ward councillor Steph Nissen agrees.

She said: “I welcome its removal. Although it was not an imminent risk, it has been a concern with teenagers pictured climbing it which were shared by residents.

“The fact it is removed gives reassurance for residents and visitors of the area. I’m pleased to see it gone.”

Storm Henk was predicted to cause “injuries and danger to life” as The Met Office issued a ten-hour amber weather warning for wind when it hit.
