CONCERNED residents are calling for safety measures to be put in place on a road in Stanway after a crash left a pedestrian with serious injuries.
Essex Police officers are continuing to investigate a serious smash involving a car and a pedestrian in London Road, Stanway, at about midday on Monday.
After arriving at the scene, police closed the road in both directions at its junction with Lucy Lane South while paramedics treated a man with serious injuries.
He was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital for immediate treatment where, at this time, he is in a stable condition.
A man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving before being released under investigation.
Since the crash, residents have called for more to be done to prevent similar incidents happening in London Road in the future.
Everything from installing speed bumps and narrowing the road to a 20mph speed limit being introduced and more police speed check were suggested.
Some residents even said they have experienced several near-misses in the past as a result of dangerous driving on the road.
Stanway councillor Lesley Scott-Boutell has now said she is "doing everything that is necessary to make the area safer".
“I want to assure residents that I am aware of the issues," she added.
"It is a heavily condensed area and people are looking further ahead when driving there. People trying to nip from Lucy Lane South are also a danger.
“I will ask to have the crossings along the road reviewed for safety.”
Councillor Jeremy Hagon has also voiced his support for further reviews of the area.
Back in 2023, he even applied for a signalised crossing to be put in place near Millers Lane.
After a pedestrian conflict survey and further reviews by the Local Highways Panel, however, it was said the proposed update would not take place.
Mr Hagon said: “We definitely haven’t given up on the possibility of improvements here, and I have asked for the application proposal to be kept active in the Local Highways Panel schemes list.
“Stanway has become much busier and thousands of homes have been built without the infrastructure.
“We need to challenge planning officers and ask us, are we doing enough for Stanway?
“It is a priority on our list and I will continue to push for improvements to be made.”
