Pubs and bars are vital part of any city - and Colchester is no exception.

TripAdvisor has updated their 2024 ranking of Colchester's best "pubs and club". 

While TripAdvisor rankings are based on the average rating by customers with the value of all reviews depreciating over time. 

So, here are Colchester's best pubs and clubs, according to TripAdvisor.

No Name Bar and Games

Having only opened in May, 2023 the No Name Bar and Games in the city centre has been propelled to the top of the rankings with a 4.5 star rating based on 78 reviews.

Located in Long Wyre Street, the activity-led bar offers axe throwing, crazy golf, table tennis, shuffleboard and more.

The cost of “competitive socialising” at the site is £20 for an off-peak 2-hour pass which allows you to play all games. 

Caron, who recently visited for a hen-do, said her 75-year-old nan “thoroughly enjoyed” her time there, even winning at axe-throwing.

While Tom said he “popped in” on New Year’s Day and found the staff and drinks “top notch.”

The Fox Inn

The Fox Inn, on Mersea Island, provides pints, cocktails, business lunches and those all-important Sunday roasts.

A family-run and freehouse pub, the East Road watering hole serves real ale, traditional home-cooked meals at lunchtimes, and a wide variety of snacks including milkshakes and smoothies.

Punter Richard said he had a lovely welcome at the bar and the inn “was a great example of how to do things properly”.

While customer Paul said as well as “great beer” the roast dinner “was excellent value and very tasty”.

Walkout Colchester

With 65 reviews and a 4-star rating, Walkabout Colchester, comes third on the list.

Part of a national chain, Walkabout is both a sports bar and night-club which is open until 3am on Friday and Saturday nights.

Walkabout Colchester serves food from noon to 9pm every day with customer Lacey saying in August, 2023 that she had an “especially juicy burger” in the “great venue”.

Somdip Dey praised the staff members, adding: “This is my go to place for night outs in Colchester.”

Victoria Inn

Victoria Inn in Old Station Road is also ranked highly by TripAdvisor and it was also named as Colchester’s best pub in 2015.

With 46 reviews and a 4.5 star rating, the pub even allows people to eat fish and chips inside from across the road.

The pub’s current real ale selection includes draught beer from the Colchester, Watson, Neon Raptor, and Brid’s breweries.

David in October, 2023 described the pub as “unpretentious but friendly”.

While Christopher in 2022 said he had “five new beers” he had never had before which he enjoyed while sitting out in the sun.

Silk Road Lounge & Cocktail Bar

The Silk Road Lounge & Cocktail Bar in St Botolph’s Street offers booking and VIP experiences as well as walk-ins.

The bar has the only 5am licence in Colchester and has recently undergone a major transformation.

It boasts four different bars, a heated outside terrace and a Shisha bar with more than 25 flavours.

Sonny said the club was the “best venue in Colchester” while Kian described the cocktails as “amazing”.
