MORNING commuters were stuck in more traffic than usual on Friday as a three-way traffic light installation slowed down queues.
Essential work had been going on in Mill Road, just after Bedford Road, since earlier in the week.
The three-way traffic light system can stop traffic coming both ways down Mill Road as well as cars coming out of Bedford Road.
The roadworks have caused some cars to be stuck on the road for up to 30 minutes.
These queues have caused traffic to be backed up as far as Colne Bank Roundabout, as well as cars blocking up the Northern Approach and Mill Road junction.
Motorists who use the road often can expect more delays going forward as the works are expected to be complete by January 18.
A spokesman for UK Power Networks said: "Engineers have completed essential repairs to an underground electricity cable to maintain reliable power supplies for local residents in Mill Road, Colchester.
"The roadworks are being managed by the water company following a water leak, while their repairs are being completed."
One driver said: "My journey time was doubled because of these roadworks.
"I know the workers have to do their jobs safely but something needs to be done about the timing of the traffic lights."
