“UNSUITABLE” repairs have left a historic building in Colchester city centre in need of remedial works.
Herrick House, a Grade II listed building in the Dutch Quarter, is in need of remedial roof works, a planning application has revealed.
Architects working on behalf of the Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (EPUT), which has offices at the site, have applied to Colchester Council for permission to carry out the works.
A report prepared by Castons, an Ipswich-based firm of chartered surveyors, in 2022 reveals several issues with the roof, including a missing section which allows rainwater to flow into the structure underneath.
It also says an “unsuitable repair in relation to the listed building status” had been carried out.
The report also reveals the building has a “failing brick arch” requiring further inspection.
“External windows to the first floor appeared to have deteriorated at cill frame with potential for wet rot to have developed,” it added.
The building in St Helens Lane was originally built in 1867 and is currently home to the offices of EPUT’s specialist mental health team.
EPUT says it is hoping to carry out the work in the coming months and confirmed there will be no disruption to patients or services running from Herrick House.
