A TRAIN passenger has been fined nearly £500 after trying to avoid a fare which would have cost him only £3.50.
Atha Aziz, of Avon Way, Colchester, had been travelling between the Hythe and Colchester Town in May last year when he failed to hand over his ticket to an inspector.
Officials at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court considered the case shortly before Christmas, proving Aziz’s guilt in his absence.
Aziz, 36, was fined £220 and ordered to pay a surcharge to fun victim services of £88; he was also ordered to pay £175 in costs and was also required to pay the ticket fare of £3.50.
It means Aziz’s fine came to a total of £486.50.
