AVID birdwatchers returned to Colchester Industrial Estate today in the rain to catch a glimpse of the rare waxwings reported to still be in the area.

Having been spotted in the area two weeks ago, birdwatchers have been coming and going to have their own look at the beautiful waxwings.

Despite the pouring rain, twitchers showed up to Brunel Way, in the estate, to watch the birds pick berries off the foliage and shelter in the trees.

Birdwatcher and Colchester resident Shaun Whant spotted the birds for the first time on Friday.

He said: "They are very beautiful birds - it's been a very good year to spot them.

"We need to protect our wildlife so we can continue to enjoy their life and beauty."

Others on the scene included John and Ronnie Mason, from Colchester, who came down with their binoculars to spot waxwings for the first time.

Ronnie said: "I have been birdwatching on and off for many years and I have been trying to get more into it.

"I think seeing these waxwings for the first time has definitely got me more interested.

"It's not so good seeing them in the rain but at least we have managed to see them.

"Birdwatching really is an all-weather hobby."
